According to a recent survey conducted online, car owners trust independent repair shops over dealerships for auto repairs by a margin of two to one.

The main reasons for preferring an independent repair shop over the dealership are better prices and mechanic relationships, with 80 percent of those surveyed stating that they felt they were overcharged for service at a dealership. Over 90 percent of the participants believed they could save at least 10 percent by visiting an independent repair shop. This wasn’t all perception either, as 87 percent reported that independent shop quotes were actually more affordable than dealer quotes.

The survey was conducted online by AutoMD with over 3,000 car owners responding between November 2 to December 12, 2012. Of those respondents, 67 percent said they trusted an independent repair shop more than a dealership to repair their vehicle.

Despite all this, those that did go to the dealership were mostly satisfied with their experience: 47 percent said they were either satisfied or very satisfied with their experience while 23 percent responded with neutral. The 30 percent that were dissatisfied believed that they were overcharged for the service.
